Daredevil ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes Killed In Crash Of Homemade Rocket

Hughes was killed when the rocket crashed Saturday.Mercedes Blackehart/APThe daredevil “Mad” Mike Hughes was killed in a rocket launch gone wrong Saturday in Barstow, Calif., two witnesses to the accident confirmed. He was 64.It was the third launch for Hughes in one of his homemade rockets and part of his eventual plan to be able to determine for himself, up in the sky, if the Earth was as flat as he proclaimed to believe.“Mad” Mike Hughes climbs into his home-built rocket before its launch near Barstow, Calif. Hughes was killed when the rocket crashed into the ground shortly after launching.Mercedes Blackehart/APA steel ladder was attached to the rocket’s launch ramp to make it easier for Hughes to enter the rocket’s cockpit. But when the rocket launched, it ended up hitting the ladder and setting the launch on course for disaster.”It ripped off a parachute can, which deployed the parachute, which got caught in the thrust of the rocket and kind of took the rocket off course a little bit,” said Justin Chapman, a freelance journalist who was at the launch site. The steam-powered rocket wobbled and did a huge arc before crashing less than a minute later.”He went way up in the sky,” Chapman said. “I’m not sure how high. But his goal was 5,000 feet. Then it did an arc and then came straight down and nose-dived into the desert floor about half a mile away from the launch pad.”The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were called at 1:52 p.m. Saturday to a private property off of Highway 247 in Barstow and pronounced a man deceased “after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event.””We don’t know what happened,” said Waldo Stakes, a close friend of Hughes who’s been involved in the launches and was at the scene. Stakes says the rocket landed nearly a mile away from the launch site. There were about 50 to 60 people on hand for the event, including a crew from the Science Channel, which was documenting Hughes’ launch as part of a series on homemade astronauts.Hughes previously launched in March 2018, when he soared roughly 1,875 feet in the air in the Mojave Desert before parachutes deployed and guided the rocket back to the ground. He emerged relatively unscathed at the time, telling The Associated Press he had pain in his back, but was glad to not have “chickened out.”AP via YouTube

THE TWO-WAY

One Giant Leap For A Man, One Small Step Toward Proving Earth Is A ‘Frisbee’

Hughes also launched in Winkelman, Ariz., in 2014, traveling 1,374 feet, according to the AP.Previous to taking up rocketry, Hughes was a stuntman who jumped limousines. He holds the record for the longest limousine ramp jump, according to Guinness World Records. Hughes jumped a 6,500-pound Lincoln Town Car stretched limo 103 feet at Perris Auto Speedway in 2002.”He was trying to recreate the Snake River Canyon jump that Evel Knievel tried years ago,” Chapman said. “And I think that ultimately didn’t come together. But he did just jump limos over big distances and then moved on to building his own rockets and launching himself that way.”Chapman, who has been writing a lengthy profile of Hughes, said the steam-powered rocket launches weren’t intended to actually lend credence to Hughes’ noted flat-Earth beliefs. They were a short-term step to get publicity and funding for his ultimate goal: a “rockoon” — part rocket, part balloon — “that would take him up about 62 miles to the edge of space, to the Kármán Line, where, as he put it, he wanted to see what shape this planet is.”Hughes was skilled at self-promotion, with posts on his websites detailing a dating app sponsorship, a radio show (on Flat Earth Radio), a cross-country limousine trip to “measure the curvature of the United States,” a coloring book, a run for governor of California and more. The filmmakers who followed Hughes to make the documentary Rocketman — Mad Mike’s Mission to Prove the Flat Earth, wrote that Hughes “had a soft spirit and empathy for the world” that was often at odds with his public persona.”He was often lonely and felt his accomplishments as a daredevil had been forgotten,” they wrote. “Ultimately, he just wanted to lead a meaningful life. He had very little money, but he found a way to bring excitement and purpose to his life by doing affordable stunts with rockets that he built himself using spare parts.”Chapman says that Hughes “fully understood the risks” of his rocket launches. “He knew very well, he said very often, that this thing could kill you, he was very well aware of that. He was a daredevil and he was driven by this compulsion to do extraordinary things and inspire people, as he put it.”Stakes simply called Hughes the “greatest daredevil this country has ever seen.”

‘Mad’ Mike Hughes, who wanted to prove the flat-Earth theory, dies in homemade-rocket disaster

volume

By Alex Horton Feb. 23, 2020 at 10:27 p.m. GMT+2In December, buttressed by his conviction and advances in homemade rocketry, “Mad” Mike Hughes flipped on a camera and fantasized about the moment when he shows mankind that it lives on a verdant disk. The plan: Float dozens of miles high in a balloon, then fly a rocket to the Karman line, the 62-mile-high barrier that separates the atmosphere and the cold vacuum of space, filming the entire way. “For three hours, the world stops,” Hughes said during a live stream, imagining the reaction.Hughes, a self-styled daredevil, flat-Earth theorist and limousine-jumping stuntman, died Saturday when his crudely built contraption propelled him on a column of steam, spiraled through the air and cratered into the sagebrush outside Barstow, Calif. He was 64.

Justin Chapman, a freelance reporter, witnessed the launch while reporting a longer story on Hughes. The rocket’s green parachute tore away moments after takeoff, sending the crowd of 50 or so people into a panic, he said.AD“Everyone was just stunned and didn’t know what to do,” he told The Washington Post on Sunday. “They were silent for a long time.”Hughes’s support team went to inspect the crash site about a half mile away, Chapman said, and returned with the harrowing news: Hughes was dead, the rocket had pancaked, and the other three parachutes never deployed.“It was unsuccessful, and he passed away,” longtime collaborator and friend Waldo Stakes told the Associated Press.Stakes declined to say what he thinks went wrong. Hughes had at least one successful launch, in which he was strapped to a rocket bearing the words “FLAT EARTH.”“It’s a daredevil thing,” Stakes said in a short phone interview with The Post on Sunday, describing the danger and Hughes’s experience building seven rockets. “He was one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met.”ADThe rockets he has ridden are not designed to reach space, but they were an apparent step toward his ultimate vehicle. It was a tragic end for Hughes, perhaps the most visible and colorful advocate of the theory that Earth isn’t a sapphire-and-emerald globe revolving around a massive star but rather a flat plane with a tiny sun above it. While there is no one hypothesis for what the flat Earth is supposed to look like, many believers envision a flat disk ringed by sea ice, which naturally holds the oceans in.He dedicated the past several years of his life to proving the theory from a high perch — an ambitious goal that began in the front seat of a limousine.ADHughes achieved some fame in 2002 when he soared in a 103-foot jump in a Lincoln Town Car stretch limo, earning a Guinness world record. Years later, he looked to re-create a failed jump by legendary daredevil Evel Knievel, who in 1974 tried to vault Idaho’s Snake River Canyon in a similarly designed steam-powered rocket. Knievel’s chute deployed early, and he missed the mark.An amateur rocket-maker finally launched himself off Earth. Now to prove it’s flat …That interest sparked communication between Hughes and the Federal Aviation Administration sometime around 2010, said James Van Laak, who was then a senior official in the agency’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation. The two struck up an odd-couple, phone-based friendship, with Hughes as the swaggering stuntman paranoid of the federal government and Van Laak the fed trying to help him find a way to legally launch the rocket, he told The Post on Sunday.ADAfter Van Laak met with the FAA’s general counsel, the agency determined that it wasn’t quite a rocket launch by definition, since a ramp would be the main propulsion system. That helped avoid complicated safety reviews, and Hughes agreed to keep local safety officials in the loop, Van Laak said. They last spoke in 2012, he said. Two years later, Hughes flew a quarter-mile over Winkelman, Ariz., in a flight that ended with Hughes being dragged from the remains of the rocket. He watched another daredevil make the Snake River Canyon jump in 2016.In March 2018, Hughes rode his garage-made rocket 1,875 feet above the Mojave Desert, reaching a speed of 250 mph, the AP reported. It was the next step in his mission to photograph the world. “It’ll shut the door on this ball Earth,” Hughes said then.ADBut whether the planet is a flat plane, or a globe, is something he openly wrestled with, telling CBS News that he was both confident in what he would find but open to other ideas. An elephant’s story does not end when it dies“I expect to see a flat disk up there,” he said of his ultimate goal to get to space, months after his 2018 launch. “I don’t have an agenda. If it’s a round Earth or a ball, I’m going to come down and say, ‘Hey, guys, I’m bad. It’s a ball, okay?’ ”Hughes recently signed on with the Science Channel to document his project on the television program “Homemade Astronauts,” the channel, which is part of Discovery, said in a statement.“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” the Science Channel said.ADBut a spokeswoman for the network wouldn’t say whether producers asked Hughes to rein in his flat-Earth commentary for a channel that has science in its name — and, at least theoretically, would want to assure viewers that Earth is, in fact, round. In a promo video posted on Discovery’s website ahead of the launch, Hughes does not mention his beliefs when he explains why he embarked on his now-tragic mission.“It’s to convince people they can do things extraordinary with their lives,” he said. “Maybe it pushes people to do things they wouldn’t normally do with their lives that will maybe inspire someone else.”Then Hughes expressed optimism about the takeoff.“We look forward to Saturday,” he said.Avi Selk contributed to this report, which has been updated.
